Key Highlights
Athletic Club edged Real Sociedad two goals to one at San Mamés in a match settled before half time. A bright, direct opening from the hosts produced the decisive moments and Nico Williams, named player of the match, was at the heart of both threat and finish as more than 50,000 people watched a tightly contested contest that Real Sociedad could not overturn.
First Half
Athletic Club began with a forward thrust that quickly unsettled Real Sociedad despite the visitors holding the greater share of the ball. Lined up in a four four two with Iñaki Williams wearing the captain’s armband and Alex Berenguer, Nico Williams and Maroan Sannadi feeding the attack, Athletic fashioned an immediate opening; Berenguer missed a very presentable chance in the second minute before Robert Navarro was introduced from the bench in the sixth minute. The home side dominated the danger statistics in the first period, creating several clear openings and outscoring Real Sociedad in expected goals, even though Real Sociedad controlled circulation through the midfield. Iñaki Williams put Athletic ahead after a crisp move finished from Nico Williams’s assist in the 14th minute. Luka Sučić levelled for Real Sociedad with an unassisted strike on the half hour, but Athletic reclaimed the lead when Alex Berenguer converted a penalty in first-half added time. Athletic Club led by two goals to one at the interval.
Second Half
After the break the pattern inverted: Real Sociedad retained most of the possession and peppered Athletic with more shots, but could not find the finishing touch. Athletic had a lively spell early in the second half from the 47th minute to the 51st minute that came to nothing, and thereafter the visitors crafted the clearer sustained pressure, creating a succession of attempts that were either saved or off target. Nico Williams continued to probe and tested the goalkeeper on several occasions, while Carlos Soler and others forced saves for Real Sociedad late on in a spell between the 86th minute and the 90th minute that ultimately produced no goal. Athletic defended stubbornly, offering little by way of second-half concessions beyond territory, and the match finished with Athletic Club holding on to win two goals to one.
Closing Thoughts
The victory gives Athletic Club a second consecutive league win and a measure of momentum as they travel to Osasuna next week. The result leaves Athletic in seventh place with twelve points from nine matches, a campaign still very much in its balance but buoyed by the side’s efficiency in attack. Real Sociedad remain in the upper places, occupying fifth with nineteen points from ten matches, yet the game exposed a familiar imbalance: dominance of possession and passing that was not matched by clear finishing. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side return home to face Rayo Vallecano on the next matchday, tasked with converting territory into goals if they are to sustain a top position.
