Key Highlights
Rayo Vallecano produced a brisk, clinical performance at Estadio de Vallecas to beat Celta Vigo three goals to nil, Jorge de Frutos scoring twice and taking the match award as more than 11,000 people looked on; what on the face of it was an evenly balanced contest turned into a demonstration of finishing and defensive calm for the home side.
First Half
Rayo began in a four three three and settled the midfield tempo, enjoying around 60 percent of the ball and far more accurate passing than their visitors as they probed for openings; Celta set up in a three four three and threatened early with a headed chance that flew wide, while Sergio Camello twice troubled the goalkeeper only to be denied. The decisive moment came in the 36th minute when a quick Rayo break ended with Sergio Camello teeing up Jorge de Frutos, who finished with his left foot to make the most of the home side's control of the final third. Celta had a gilt edged opportunity a little earlier when Hugo Álvarez flashed a very promising attempt off target, but at the interval Rayo Vallecano led by one goal to nil.
Second Half
After the interval Rayo brought on Giorgi Tsitaishvili as Celta had already introduced Pablo Durán before the break, and the pattern shifted as Celta took a greater share of the ball, around 56 percent, without ever testing the scoreboard keeper; Rayo, by contrast, continued to convert chances into shots on target. Jorge de Frutos doubled the lead in the 55th minute from a right foot finish after an Andrei Rațiu delivery and the match was put beyond doubt in the 74th minute when Unai López completed a fast break, guided in from Gnangoro Bouare's assist. Celta mustered their clearest spell in the closing minutes but produced no goal, and the game finished with Rayo Vallecano three goals to nil.
Closing Thoughts
The victory offers Rayo Vallecano a valuable lift and a breathing space for Beñat San José's side, who nevertheless remain seventeenth and cannot yet be assured of safety; they travel to Real Sociedad next week with momentum and questions about consistency still to answer. Celta Vigo, who remain ninth, leave Vallecas frustrated by a failure to register a shot on target despite late pressure and will need to sharpen their finishing before they host Levante next weekend under Claudio Giráldez.
