Key Highlights
Bologna overturned an early setback to beat Monza two goals to one at Stadio Renato Dall Ara, completing a comeback that was settled by a second half penalty from Federico Bernardeschi. Juan Miranda was the match's outstanding performer, providing the corner that levelled the game and earning the player of the match award.
First Half
Monza struck with almost their first meaningful action when Gustavo Varela converted a penalty in the sixth minute, an early blow that might have set the tone. It did not. Bologna dominated the opening period, enjoying roughly two thirds of the ball, far more accurate passing and the clearer chances as Jens Odgaard and others probed the Monza rearguard. The home side’s pressure culminated when Tommaso Pobega rose from a Juan Miranda corner to level in the thirty third minute, a goal that reflected Bologna’s control before the interval. Their clearest spell late in the half, from the forty first to the forty fifth minute, produced a succession of opportunities but no further reward, and the sides went in level with one goal each at half time.
Second Half
The second half began with the contest more evenly balanced and both teams trading opportunities. Monza tested the goalkeeper early through Samuele Birindelli, but the decisive moment came in the fifty ninth minute when Federico Bernardeschi coolly converted a penalty to put Bologna ahead. Monza threw on fresh legs at the break and later again in an attempt to force an equaliser, and Patrick Cutrone had the game’s clearest late opening for Monza when his very big chance was saved in the eighty first minute. Bologna saw out the remainder of the match, surviving a late flurry of attempts from both sides, and held on to win by two goals to one.
Closing Thoughts
The victory is Bologna’s third league win in succession, a run that underlines an encouraging shift in form under Raffaele Palladino and keeps them comfortably in the middle of the table. Juan Miranda’s influence both with the ball and as a threat going forward was central to the outcome, with Łukasz Skorupski also a steady presence in goal. For Monza the defeat extends a poor run of results under Ivan Jurić and leaves them lingering near the bottom of the standings, a position that will make their next fixture at home to Atalanta a testing one. Bologna travel to Parma next week having taken the momentum from this win.
