Key Highlights
Atlético Madrid left Valencia with a composed two goals to nil victory, a result settled by Alejandro Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone and watched by more than twenty thousand people. The win felt decisive rather than flamboyant: a first half breakthrough from Grimaldo and a second half finish from Giuliano Simeone were enough to see Atlético through, and Simeone was named player of the match.
First Half
Levante began the brighter, enjoying the clearest early spell and asking questions of Atlético in the opening quarter of an hour; a header by Etta Eyong in the third minute was their best opening. Yet the first half belonged to Atlético Madrid in terms of control. From roughly the sixteenth minute they grew into the game and produced the clearest sequence, keeping the ball and probing down both flanks. Their passing superiority was stark, with roughly three hundred and four accurate passes to Levante's one hundred and forty five, and that control bore fruit when Alejandro Grimaldo struck with an unassisted left foot finish in the thirty sixth minute. Levante registered a handful of efforts but could not find a way back before the interval, and Atlético Madrid led by one goal to nil at half time.
Second Half
After the break Levante edged the attacking momentum, moving the ball higher and outshooting Atlético as they chased an equaliser. Their second half produced the lion's share of attempts and a higher expected goals figure for Levante, but Atlético punished the most decisive moment. In the sixty second minute Álex Baena supplied Giuliano Simeone, who steered a left foot finish into the net to double the lead and blunt Levante's rising momentum. Atlético then brought on fresh attacking options to manage the game while Levante piled forward, creating numerous saved attempts and headers late on that could not alter the score. Atlético Madrid saw out the contest and won by two goals to nil.
Closing Thoughts
The result reinforces the contrast between the two clubs this season. Levante remain in fifteenth place and have now lost two league matches in a row; they travel to Celta Vigo next looking for a response after a match in which they created chances but failed to convert them. Atlético Madrid have climbed clear of immediate pressure around the top and have now won seven league matches in a row under Diego Simeone, a run that sets up a high profile home meeting with Barcelona next. The underlying numbers underline the telling detail of the afternoon: Levante generated more shooting threat and a higher expected goals tally, but Atlético were clinical at the key moments and comfortably took the points.
