Key Highlights
Inter secured a routine victory at Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo as two late own goals handed them a two goals to nil win. The scoreline flattered Inter only in its neatness; the match was settled in a short, decisive burst late in the second half after a prolonged period of Inter pressure.
First Half
Both sides began in matching three five two formations, which turned the early exchanges into a contest of midfield density and wing play. Venezia produced the clearest early spell, probing between the sixth and ninth minute but without reward, and they mustered more attempts on target in the opening period than the visitors. Inter, however, dictated the ball, enjoying roughly two thirds of possession and edging the attacking momentum before the interval while creating a couple of promising openings of their own. Venezia’s central midfielders Thórir Helgason and Kike Pérez stood out for work rate and composure, but neither side could convert pressure into goals. The score at half time was nil to nil.
Second Half
Inter altered the tempo after the interval, bringing on Manuel Akanji and Hakan Çalhanoglu and clearly carrying the greater attacking momentum through much of the second half. Venezia had a chance to change the game when Gianluca Busio, introduced from the bench, squandered a very high probability opportunity in the 66th minute. From there Inter grew into a long, probing spell, their clearest between the 71st and the 84th minute, and that pressure produced the decisive moments. In the 80th minute Matías Moreno conceded an own goal from a fast break to put Inter ahead and two minutes later Redouane Halhal turned a corner into his own net to make it two nil. Both goals were own goals and unassisted, coming as the penalty area grew congested under sustained Inter pressure. Carlos Augusto’s presence was influential throughout the contest and Inter finished the match in control; the full time score was Inter two goals to nil.
Closing Thoughts
The win was Inter’s fourth league victory in a row and it consolidates their place near the top of the table, underlining Cristian Chivu’s promising start to the campaign as they travel to Milan next. For Davide Nicola and Venezia the result deepens concern; they remain at the foot of the standings and have now lost two league matches in succession ahead of a trip to Como. The match underlined a familiar contrast this season: Inter’s control of possession and passage play eventually told, while Venezia’s openings proved too infrequent and one slip in the box was punished decisively.
